BIG STANDARD SUMMARY
10.4 Students analyze patterns of global change in the era of New Imperialism in at least two of the following regions or countries: Africa, Southeast Asia, China, India, Latin America, and the Philippines.
All of these imperializing countries had one thing in common and it was their motives and how they imperialized. The motives they had imperialized for included things such as gaining more resources and territory but most importantly it was to look strong to other countries. For example in India, Britain imperialized India in Southeast Asia. Britain’s East Indian Company set up trading posts all over India which regulated the items they sold and made. As the Maugham government in India fell, the East Indian Company took advantage of this and seized more power. They made India create cash crops for Britain which gave them more power. Another topic that allowed the countries to imperialize was the weapon advancements they had. The East Indian Company had weapons which gave them more power over the Indian natives. This is only one case of imperialism. Latin America was a target to imperialize because it was an area rich in resources, had countries with newly gained independence, and area that needed money to modernize and industrialize. Because of all the resources Latin America contained, it was a prime target to imperialize. Another pattern that occured in these imperialized lands were that railroads were built all over the place to best exploit the agricultural and mineral wealth of imperialized lands. This occured in many locations such as Latin America and in Africa. Many countries had imperialized Africa. A specific country of this is South Africa which got imperialized by Britain. South Africa was ruled by Britain and were treated horribly. Many South Africans worked as slaves for the British for their economic use. Many of the British also sold many South Africans to the United States and other places. This affected the South African population because their population decreased due to slavery. Population decrease was also common among these imperialized countries because of many factors such as new germs and new guns.
